OUR MISSION
In summer 2024 Survey Group Denmark has access to a research vessel operation South of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean
We want to provide evidence of seafloor activity that might risk tsunami events/catastrophes along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Description of research project:
By using high-resolution acoustic methods in combination with sediment coring (box cores and piston cores) supported by video-recording we will investigate possible seabed evidence of plate-tectonic activity in a seamount-dominated area Southeast of the Azores.
The techniques to be applied will enable us to detect various features of (surficial) sediment disturbance or disruption (e.g. faulting, slumping) indicative of tectonic activity in the past. The outcome of this study could, amongst others, benefit improvement of regional tsunami risk assessment for the Azores or other coastal areas around the eastern North Atlantic.
It is envisaged also to involve Portuguese scientists and students in the post-cruise analyses of the collected sediment cores. This investigation might also provide signs of the DNA geo-archaeological history on the seafloor through thousands of years.

Survey Group Denmark is interested in a vessel that can handle a containerised ROV or AUV research expedition. Survey Group Denmark is also interested in deep sea equipment for example an AUV for our expedition in july 2024.
Our purpose is to investigate the seafloor at 3000 to 3500 m depth. We are inviting sponsors and companies to contribute with financial funding and/or with the right survey equipment.
